12-Speed and new free hub design, But no e-bike specific components
As you may already know, Shimano have revealed their upcoming XTR M9100 groupset which is slated to release September 2018. Released in two variants, a cross country focused M9100 and enduro specific M9120, the drivetrains feature 12 speeds and the new Hyperglide+ freehub. This is Shimano’s first 12-speed drivetrain which will finally rival SRAM’s Eagle set up.
For more information, you can hop on Shimano’s website. The real news for us is the lack of eBike supporting components and electric bike specific drivetrain. SRAM currently offer the EX1 groupset which has been designed and manufactured to suit electric bikes. With the release of the XTR M9100, we were hoping for some eBike specific components or some insight to the future of Shimano in regards to pedelecs. Unfortunately from their comment, it seems an eBike specific drivetrain is not happening anytime soon.
